The Suburban is one of the most integral and influential vehicles in Chevy’s collection. It’s not news to anyone that Chevy is one of the longest-running automotive manufacturers and—to millions of drivers for over a hundred years—has defined the pinnacle of American ingenuity in the automotive space. Chevy’s lineup has changed considerably in over a century—not just Chevy, but many other manufacturers also experimented with different concepts as the automotive landscape was (and still is) rapidly changing.
This brings us to the Chevy Suburban, the longest-running nameplate currently in production by this manufacturer and more than 110 years old. While it hasn’t been around since Chevy’s origins in 1911, a fun fact about the Suburban is that its first iteration was released in 1946, the same year that co-founder Arthur Chevrolet passed away and a year before third co-founder—automotive legend William C. Durant—passed away. Earlier appearances of the Suburban name were present in the 1930s, but these vehicles were known as the Carryall Suburban. Once the vehicle was officially named the Chevy Suburban with the release of the 1947 model, it has remained that way since.
Today, the world knows the Suburban as Chevy’s largest SUV, but it’s not the only full-size SUV in their lineup. The Traverse joined the ranks of Chevy’s lineup of SUVs in the mid-1990s as an extension of the GMC Yukon, in which both vehicles are distant relatives. The Suburban, however, remains the largest SUV in the lineup, and that increase in size doesn’t come at any major performance loss over the Tahoe.
With more cargo space than any other Chevy vehicle, it’s also one of the most spacious for people, ranking up there with the Tahoe. The Suburban nails down the fundamentals and everything between. The modern-day SUV has the Suburban to thank. It’s the perfect family vehicle and one that will eventually reach its centennial, which is a monumental milestone as it isn’t just one of Chevy’s oldest nameplates still in production but one of the oldest in production, period.
At our dealership, we have Chevy Suburban models from more than just the latest generation. The Suburban has changed in many ways over the years, but the 2015 Suburban marked a shift in things like tech and performance as the 2015 Suburban’s 5.3L V8 engine provides 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque over the 320 hp and 335 lb-ft of torque from the year before. This generation of Suburban, which included the 2015 through 2020 models, matched performance with Chevy’s other full-size SUVs, yet the Suburban is easily the most voluminous, with the 2015 through 2020 models having maximum cargo capacities of 121.1 cu.ft. with the two back rows folded.
These Suburban models always have 39.3 cu.ft. of cargo space, but folding down the row furthest back will expand this number to 76.7 cu.ft. While the 8.0-inch infotainment centers in these older Suburban models don’t have connectivity tools like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available features like the rear-seat entertainment hubs and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot are very useful. Chevy would make up for any of the shortcomings in the generation that followed.
The 2021 Chevy Suburban was the biggest leap for the full-size SUV it ever received. For 2021 models and later, the SUV was increased in size considerably, there were several performance enhancements, and these Suburban models would get a technological makeover. Making up for the lack of features in prior models, the 2021 Suburban has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard, with an infotainment center that can be as large as 10.2 inches. Cargo space for Suburban models of this generation ranges between 41.5, 93.8, and 144.7 cu.ft. of space.
The Suburban never had cargo space like this before, and it’s one of its most defining features over other full-size SUVs. Performance improvements included the addition of a turbo-diesel 3.0L I-6 engine with the 2021 Suburban, with an identical amount of torque to the 6.2L V8 engine that’s been optional for this SUV since the 2019 Suburban.
