How to Check Transmission Fluid

transmission fluid

Knowing how to check your transmission fluid in your new Chevrolet can help you prevent expensive maintenance problems. Your car’s transmission is what keeps it moving, so without your transmission, you can’t go anywhere. Not sure how to check the transmission fluid level in your new or pre-owned Chevy? No worries. Edwards Chevrolet Co., Inc. is at your service! Read on to learn how to check transmission fluid, and contact us if you have questions or need to schedule service around Birmingham.

Checking Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these simple steps to check your vehicle’s transmission fluid levels:

  1. Turn your car engine on for a few minutes before checking your transmission fluid so that the engine is warmed up properly. Put your vehicle in park, and set the parking brake before opening the hood.
  2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. On front-wheel-drive vehicles, it’s likely located to the right of the oil dipstick. Review your owner’s manual if you can’t find it.
  3. Remove the dipstick, touch the fluid, and move it around between your thumb and index finger. It should look pretty clear, with a slight pink hue. If the fluid looks dirty or gives off any burnt smell, it’s time for new fluid.
  4. Use a rag to wipe off the dipstick and insert it back into your car. Pull it out again and check the level. If the fluid level is below the “Full” mark, you need to add more transmission fluid.
  5. Use a funnel to add fluid until it reaches the right spot, but be careful not to overfill it.

How to Check the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

If there’s no dipstick under the hood anywhere, your car may be equipped with a sealed transmission. If you’re wondering, “what is a sealed transmission?” you’re not alone! A sealed transmission means there’s no dipstick with which to measure the transmission fluid level. If your car has a sealed transmission, don’t try to check its fluid level on your own because you could damage the seal or your transmission if you’re not careful. The service team at Edwards Chevrolet Co., Inc. will gladly check the transmission fluid level for you when you bring your car in for service.

When to Check the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

The purpose of a sealed transmission is to reduce the amount of wasted transmission fluid, which ultimately saves you money. Still, issues can occur and the transmission fluid eventually must be replaced. Watch for these warning signs while driving on Hoover roads, which may indicate a problem with your sealed transmission:

  • You hear strange noises when the gears change
  • The gears hesitate before shifting
  • During acceleration, there’s a slight delay when the gears shift

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

Are you wondering, “How often do you check your transmission fluid?” You should check all the major fluid levels in your vehicle monthly, which includes your transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and engine oil. As always, review your owner’s manual for a more specific maintenance schedule for your model.
